Girls with ADHD and superior IQs may be able to compensate academically for many years. In one study by Joseph Biederman and his coinvestigators, published in Biological Psychiatry in 2006, girls diagnosed with ADHD in childhood were seen to have a greater incidence of psychotic mood or anxiety disorders as they entered their 20s. Rates of these disorders increased over time, with up to about 60% exhibiting one of these problems compared to control subjects (25%) in young adulthood, but the roots can be found in early childhood.

When compared to boys, girls reported more often that it was “very difficult” for them to get things done, to focus on schoolwork, to get along with parents, and to make friends. Girls with ADHD are also more likely to feel embarrassed by their ADHD symptoms, resulting in reactive behaviors of acting out or withdrawal. With a broader awareness of ADHD and better understanding of the differences in its presentation in girls and boys, it is hoped that girls will no longer have to suffer silently with the many burdens that the disorder presents for them.
