They judged them to be uneducated, ill-bred, and lacking in morality. The self-proclaimed “refined and respectable” blacks of the North considered the “tenant farmers” of the South a threat to the strides they believed they had made into mainstream society. For, again, regardless of how different they judged themselves from the “tenant farmers” class, they were very aware that the white public lumped them all together into one black heap of people.
