It is a joy for me to greet you on the opening of the 2012 camping season.
It is also a joy to introduce the Director of St. Andrew’s Camp for this year, Paul McDonald, a student at St. Tikhon’s Seminary in South Canaan, PA, who is entering his third and final year of study at the school. I know Paul well — he has been my student in a number of Seminary courses.
Paul’s vision for St. Andrew’s is to fulfill the legacy of the late Protopresbyter Alexander Warnecke, founder of the camp. More than a half century ago, Fr. Alexander purchased the grounds and set up a program to provide Orthodox young people with a summer experience of growing in their relationship with Christ through divine services and personal prayer, learning more about the truth of the Orthodox Faith, making new friends by sharing fun and Christian fellowship with one another, and enjoying the beauty of nature that the camp property offers.
Paul intends to continue Fr. Alexander’s vision and the programs set up by the directors who have preceded him — with four weeks of camping fun, fellowship and faith building. Each week will focus on a different dimension of the St. Andrew’s experience: Horse Week, Music Week, Ecology Week and Teen Week.
I welcome all of you who are joining us for camp this year and hope that you enjoy the summer experience of a lifetime! Your counselors have been preparing for your arrival all week under the guidance of Paul, and numerous dedicated, loving volunteers have dedicated their time and talents to making camp an experience that is wonderful for everyone who participates.
I know that I will be at Saint Andrew’s each week , and am looking forward to seeing and being with all of you.
+ Bishop Michael
